MANSAG 2012 Summer Charity Ball and 3rd Educational Symposium

Sightsavers’ involvement in Nigeria dates back to the pre-independence era, in 1960. Its early work was primarily in the area of rehabilitation and education of blind people. In recent years the emphasis has moved to developing and implementing eye health programmes, social inclusion and community development in line with our 2009-2013 strategic framework.

Sightsavers currently works in seven states in Nigeria, namely Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara and Cross River

We support the following programmes in Nigeria:

  •  Six onchocerciasis control programmes in Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Zamfara and Sokoto States.
  • Five eye health programmes in Kaduna, Kwara, Cross River, Sokoto and Zamfara States – with emphasis on primary eye care as an integral part of primary health care.
  • One social inclusion programme through community based rehabilitation (CBR) in one Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State.
  • Two vitamin A supplementation programmes in Kogi and Kwara States.
  • Three trachoma control programmes: using the WHO SAFE strategy in Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States.
  • An innovative pilot inclusive education project in one LGA each in Kaduna, Sokoto and Kwara States.
